Stepping Away from the Table: My First Blog Post

Oct 02, 2025

If you’re here, you’re probably curious about two things: how to make a living as a Virtual Assistant (VA) and how to build a life where travel isn’t just a vacation — it’s the lifestyle.

That’s exactly why I started this blog.

When I first began my virtual work journey, I wasn’t dreaming about palm trees or passport stamps. I just wanted a new type of freedom. Freedom from the table, freedom from the grind, freedom to say yes to opportunities instead of being stuck at home.

At the time, that looked as simple as wanting to choose my schedule outside of running a successful grooming business, being more present for my family, and not feeling like work was controlling every long-term decision I made.

Over time, though, that freedom started showing up in ways I never could have predicted. Suddenly, “working from home” didn’t just mean my kitchen table, the local Starbucks, or a home office. It meant booking one-way flights, working in airport lounges, answering emails poolside, and realizing I could build a business that fit my outside-the-box life instead of the other way around.

And that’s what I want to share with you here: the real ins and outs of of traveling as a virtual assistant (or any “work from anywhere” career).

The Beginning: Why I Stepped Away

Let’s be real — nobody wakes up one day and says, “I’m going to become a digital nomad because I love jet lag and unreliable Wi-Fi.” (At least, I didn’t!)

My beginning was much simpler. I fell into Savvy Groomer because I had knowledge to share with the grooming industry that was unique, and I wanted to help. Part of that was also creating a way to support myself, use my skills, and create a little breathing room.

I knew I was capable of more than clocking in and out, waiting for the once or twice a year vacation days I had to plan 6–12 months in advance… that never felt long enough anyway.

So I started small. A couple of clients here and there, a laptop, and a lot of trial and error. Honestly, I didn’t even think about travel at first. But once I realized I wasn’t tied to a physical location, a little lightbulb went off:

💡 If I can do this from my couch, I can do this from anywhere.

Why a Travel Blog as a VA?

This blog isn’t just about me documenting where I go. It’s about showing you what’s possible.

I also encourage other VAs (and remote workers in general) to create a travel blog or share your journey on social media. Not only is it fun, it also doubles as your portfolio. Think about it — potential clients want to see that you can:

Write engaging content
Stay consistent
Organize information clearly
Balance professionalism with personality

Your blog or social media posts prove all of that without you having to spell it out. It’s your living resume — and it naturally attracts clients who value your lifestyle.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Here are a few things I wish someone had told me before I packed my bags and opened my laptop abroad:

Keep it simple. You don’t need fancy software, expensive gear, or a huge audience to start. Pick one platform and share consistently. If you want to share more later, great — but perfection isn’t required.

Track your spending daily. Travel sneaks money out of your pocket if you’re not careful. I set myself a daily burn rate — usually $65–$100 depending on where I am. Some days I go under, some days I go over, but that average keeps me steady.

Work balanced with play. Adventures are tempting, but I’ve learned I’m happiest (and clients are happiest) when I get the important stuff done first. If you’re a morning person, tackle work early. If you’re a night owl, do it then. Just keep it timely so you can explore without your inbox nagging you.

Find your Wi-Fi rhythm. Don’t assume every Airbnb or café has reliable internet. Some countries are downright awful for steady Wi-Fi, and some cities you may not get signal at all. I always download work offline when I can, and I keep a short list of “backup spots” in each city — or I leave myself a buffer until the next port.

Boundaries are everything. Traveling doesn’t mean you’re on vacation — but clients won’t know that unless you set expectations. Be upfront, but also show them you can deliver.

The Emotional Side of Travel

Not every day is glamorous. There are nearly missed flights, exhaustion, and moments of loneliness. There are times when the Wi-Fi won’t cooperate, or when you miss a family event back home.

But there’s also something powerful about realizing you’re capable of handling those moments. You learn to adapt, to trust yourself, and to enjoy the freedom you’ve worked hard to create.

👉 The emotional side is just as important as the budgeting and logistics. Travel teaches resilience, patience, and creativity — the same qualities that make you a strong VA.

Where We’re Going Together

This blog is about more than me telling stories — it’s about helping you start your own.

In the posts ahead, I’ll share:

  • How to budget realistically for long-term travel

  • The best tools and apps I use to keep client work smooth

  • Packing tips for working abroad without overstuffing your suitcase

  • Ways to balance adventure with responsibility

  • And yes, the fun stuff: the hidden gems, the lounge hacks, the splurges worth it (and the ones not worth it!)

My goal: that every time you visit here, you’ll leave with at least one idea you can put into action.

The Big Picture

Here we are — the first post of many.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to start creating a life outside the table, this is it. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going. You just need to take one step — whether that’s reaching out to a client, writing your first blog post, or even booking that first flight.

Freedom doesn’t arrive all at once. It comes piece by piece, decision by decision, until one day you look around and realize you’ve built a business that supports the life you actually want.

And if I can do it, you can too.

Here’s to stepping away from the table — together. 💙
